PACT welcomes new spotlight on adoption in the media

Adoption will be the focus of a new four-part ITV documentary called A family of my own due to air weekly from Thursday 24th April at 9pm
17 Apr 2014
Parents And Children Together (PACT) welcomes this spotlight on adoption as 6,890* children wait to be adopted.

The series, presented by adoptee Nicky Campbell, will feature a gay couple who thought they would never become parents. Other stories include a single mum who is adopting for the third time, a baby boy who was born withdrawing from crack cocaine, and couples who, after struggling with infertility, are finally getting close to having families of their own.

PACT is an ‘Outstanding’ rated adoption charity by Ofsted, which has been helping people to adopt for over 60 years. Last year 190 children were placed with, or formally adopted by, PACT families.

PACT’s Chief Executive, Jan Fishwick, said: “The programme will highlight the care and expertise that go into preparing adopters and finding children the right parents who will love and nurture them after their difficult early start. A family of my own will help to encourage more people to consider adopting and I’m especially pleased to see a variety of adopters featured in the programme.

“At PACT over recent years we have seen a positive change in the numbers and range of people coming forward to adopt. We help people from different ethnic and faith backgrounds to adopt with PACT, as well as single people, lesbian and gay families, older people and those with and without children. We also help people who live with a disability or have recovered from an illness such as cancer.”

PACT’s adoptive families include Dionne and Paul and Annette and Nigel, who will be speaking at forthcoming PACT Adoption Information Events.

Dionne and Paul will share their personal experience of adopting at PACT’s Adoption Information Event on Thursday 8th May in Reading.

PACT adopter, Dionne, said: “I have waited so long to be a mum, it’s a dream come true. I can’t thank PACT enough from the bottom of my heart for everything they have done to make my dream of becoming a mum a reality.”

Annette and Nigel will be speaking at PACT’s Adoption Information Event on 12th May in Clapham. They will share their story about adopting their daughter, who has mixed heritage, through PACT in 2012.

Annette said: “We were passionate about adopting and knew our child was out there somewhere. After a long search we met the team from PACT and immediately we knew they were perfect for us. We not only have an adorable addition to our family we have an extended family that have supported, and continue to support us, in bringing up our little one. PACT is a truly amazing charity that we are eternally grateful to.”
